This leads up to the importance of two threads started by Ken Kennedy and (Dave) “duckweed” on the forum. Ken’s thread adds to our learning and makes us aware of meristics, such as fin & scale counts and the differences in those counts between the various populations of Scalares and Altums Based on meristic counts such as numbers of fin rays, scale counts and other factors, Kullander speculates that the P.eimikei and P.dumerelli are P.scalares. The meristic data collected on wilds may have a similar function in identifying current and future strains or breeds of domesticated Angelfish.
The thread that Dave raised, suggests that Kullander may have been erroneous in his conclusions based on incorrect information from other researchers. Time will tell, but it looks like the Angelfish world will heat up in more than one direction.
There is a lot to digest in both threads let alone breed fish, but when you get a moment, getting a basic understanding of the intent of both threads will be rewarding.

Sven O Kullander is Senior Curator, in charge of both Ichthyology and Herpetology collections at the Vertebrate Department of the Swedish Museum of Natural History. His research concerns tropical fresh water fishes particularly the family of fish that we know as cichlids.
The status of the genus Pterophyllum was summarized in a 2000 study by Sven Kullander, According to him, three species have valid names P.scalare, P.altum & P.leopoldi, but there may be more than 3 species.
Of two additional names that have been commonly in use, Kullander concluded that Pterophyllum eimekei and P. dumerilli were invalid synonyms of P.scalare, In his work, Kullander discusses the difficulty of clearly identifying the first P.scalare as described by Lichtenstein as their origins are not clear and type specimens have been lost.
